The CfL on Tour: Following in the footsteps of the novel Fräulein Nettes kurzer Sommer (Miss Nette's Short Summer) by Karen Duve, we discover the horse country of Westphalia through literature. Together with many other artists, the author and singer Bettina Bruns will travel from Hülshoff Castle to Bökerhof and back again – bringing music, texts and conversations with them. We can expect a traveling festival, a traveling circus of a special kind!

In her novel Fräulein Nettes kurzer Sommer (Miss Nice's Short Summer), Karen Duve describes not only arduous journeys to relatives in East Westphalia, but also Droste's »youth catastrophe«: During a visit to the Bökerhof, the young poet stumbles upon an intrigue set by two men close to her - and falls deeply.

The moral of the story - life is, well, not a pony farm? We don't want to leave it at that and go back to the scene of the action. Karen Duve and Bettina Bruns ride after Droste-Hülshoff in August. Their experiences along the route will be available to listen to in five exclusive episodes of the CfL podcast on the ride starting September 6.

From September 7 to 12, the journey will return and we can all be part of it. Together with other artists* we will stop at the novel locations along the way. Through music, readings and performances, we will learn what riding, traveling and writing have to do with each other and why Annette von Droste-Hülshoff hated carriage rides.

A journey from Hülshoff Castle to Bökerhof near Brakel, just like the poet Annette von Droste Hülshoff 200 years ago. A ten-day ride lies behind the author Karen Duve and the singer Bettina Bruns. Now they have arrived at their destination and on this evening they review the journey.

They set out to find out how much of Droste is still in today's Westphalia and in us. In conversation with Caspar Freiherr von Haxthausen, a descendant of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff's family, they talk about the failure, beauty and shame of traveling on horseback.
What impressions and experiences are left behind when one crosses the Münsterland and East Westphalia-Lippe in today's fast-moving times with two horsepower? Karen Duve reads from her bestselling novel "Fräulein Nettes kurzer Sommer" (Miss Nette’s Short Summer) and takes us back to the fateful summer of 1820. Bettina Bruns and Daniel Göritz present compositions by Annette von Droste Hülshoff and other classical pieces with vocals and guitar.

We celebrate the climax of their extraordinary journey, start and finish at the same time: Here ends the ride and here begins an event tour in honor of the great Westphalian poetess, which leads via several places back to Hülshoff Castle in Havixbeck near Münster.

The Gräfliche Park in Bad Driburg is a place of relaxation and healing - and beauty cures. Even the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff hoped here as a young woman for the wonders of the healing springs. On this evening, we want to turn our attention primarily to the present and its beauty dogmas.

Munich filmmaker and author Jovana Reisinger, who has been writing for VOGUE for years, knows a lot about beauty rituals. In her reading from the successful novel "Die Spitzenreiterinnen," she explains why these rituals usually have nothing to do with health. It's about the role constraints and violence to which women in our society are subjected, about beauty tips and gender stereotypes. A tribute to female rage and perseverance, with sometimes wicked humor.

The writer will be accompanied by the singer FINA.
An evening of contrasts and similarities, which invites you to subject your own beauty ideals to a purification treatment.

The private castle park of Schloss Wewer opens its gates for this extraordinary event. At three different starting times - 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. - you can embark on a literary journey of discovery in the park between old trees and flowering meadows.

There will be a poetry performance by musician and poet Rike Scheffler and a reading by bestselling author Alice Hasters. Inspired by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, both encourage reflection on the trio of themes beauty - failure - shame. Rike Scheffler's work moves between language and music in search of a shelter for the ego, and Alice Hasters looks directly into the abysses of social media.

Students from the Institute of German Studies at the University of Paderborn have also taken on the themes of beauty, failure and shame in literary form. The resulting films, essays and poetic set pieces can be found all over the park grounds and invite you to listen, read, dream.

As a prelude to an exhibition on the Immenhof novels by Ursula Bruns, everything revolves around Dick and Dalli and the Ponies for one evening at the Kulturgut Haus Nottbeck. The book for young people, published in 1952, not only surprises with its ecological ideas, but also formed the basis for the legendary film Die Mädels vom Immenhof (1955), which is one of the best-known German »Heimat« movies.

Bruns is regarded as a pioneer of the equestrian scene and was an advocate of keeping horses close to nature, for which she was awarded prestigious prizes. Author and dramaturge Georg Bühren and museum director Walter Gödden will talk about the author and her bestseller, which founded the hitherto little-noticed genre of horse literature. To conclude the evening, Karen Duve will read a pony short story. As an enthusiastic rider, the well-known author talks about how Dick and Dalli shaped her and why the volumes were so popular with girls in particular - and still are today.

From August 29, 2021 to September 6, 2021, the writer Karen Duve and the singer Bettina Bruns traveled from Münster to Brakel - on horseback. Following in the footsteps of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, they rode through Westphalia and learned a few things about distances and travel. In the age of the high-speed train, they switched to four hooves and put their trust in the beauty of slowness.

A liberation from fast travel or an attempt to slow down to Droste speed that was doomed to failure from the start? Can Westphalia be better understood through encounters along the way? Where do we end up if we follow Droste-Hülshoff's travel descriptions on asphalted roads and who else is on the way? Are we getting closer to the past? Or only to our limits? In this documentary short film by Robin Junicke, we are there live for a day, when saddle straps and strings of patience break and corn monocultures unfold their magic.

At the end of the adventure, we will be wiser by some travel wisdom and perseverance slogans and know the two artists on horseback a little bit better. Thematically and aesthetically appropriate, we will show the film in the Manege of the Westphalian Horse Museum.

Drag Show and Un-Shaming Ritual with the House of [blænk] and Masters of Ceremonies

This afternoon our journey with "Fräulein Nette" comes to an end. Symbolically we bring Annette von Droste-Hülshoff back into the bosom of the family after her "adventure" on the Bökerhof. Ashamed by the events of the fateful summer of 1820, the young poetess retreated to Hülshoff Castle and tried to overcome her sense of failure.

Shame and failure are also conquered by the drag queens of the House of [blænk], who, together with the masters of ceremony P, P and M, celebrate a loud, colorful, fun-filled un-shaming ritual. Accompanied by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff's poems and pop songs from the digital show Drag Space 1, they free themselves from imposed shame and find new ways out of frustration with humor and empathy. Biedermeier meets pop culture and ignites an emotional fire of forgiveness. Be there and be un-shamed!

Burg Vischering turns 750 and gets a visit from Fräulein Nette on the road. Singer Bettina Bruns presents a concert in honor of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff - like you've never heard before.

Bettina Bruns travels with her music back to the year 1820, when the headstrong young poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff fell victim to a love intrigue. In her concert, she approaches this painful and shameful experience with a sympathy that transcends time and borders - quite literally: together with the writer Karen Duve, she has ridden from Hülshoff Castle to Bökerhof, the scene of the traumatic events, in the footsteps of the novel Fräulein Nettes kurzer Sommer. Supported by Daniel Göritz on guitar and Anna Carawe on cello, Bettina Bruns now processes her experiences along the way: travel romance meets pure hardship, beauty meets failure and shame - and music meets narrative.
